Steel Window Restoration

Restoration Process

  1. Conduct a field survey of existing frame and sash components, glazing type, hardware, and potential abatement issues.
     
  2. Remove existing components for cataloging and shipping off site for shop restoration.
     
  3. Board up and protect all components to be field restored, leaving all components that would be damaged if removed.
     
  4. The restoration process includes the following steps for shop or field work:
    • Deglaze all sashes, storing or disposing of all glass.
    • Strip and clean/neutralize all steel components.
    • Epoxy fill and consolidate all failing or weakened steel components.
    • Weld any required components to repair missing or damaged sections.
    • Final grind and clean all material to prepare for glazing and finish.
       
  5. Prime coat all frame and sash components. Pre-prime any remaining corrosion with bonding block out primer.
     
  6. Apply two finish coats of specified paint or coating.
     
  7. Reglaze all sashes with specified glazings, tape, shims and glazing stops or compound.
     
  8. Install new or reconditioned hardware, matching existing finish.
     
  9. Complete field assembly of all components, clean and adjust for final punch list.
