Window Replication
BlackBerry's Approach
Window replication becomes an option to restoration when a project survey has been conducted and it is determined that window product is missing or beyond repair. Replication may involve a single component such as brick mould or hardware; or an entire window assembly. In dealing with project under the authority of the National Park Service or your State Historic Preservation Office, make sure an experienced architect or historic consultant is used that has knowledge of the required guidelines that must be adhered to. A complete survey must be compiled and submitted to determine if replication is acceptable, and what method and product will be approved. Once replication is the chosen approach, the following process is provided for a professional result.
Three Primary Methods
New wood components replicating original wood windows: This method duplicates exact site lines by creating custom cutting knives to produce components matching existing or original window details. Entire assemblies can be creating including box frames, weight boxes, brick mould, sills and sash. BlackBerry will provide all the necessary parts fully assembled and installed, including hardware, chain, glazing and muntins. The finished product will provide the historic replication, while offering maximum energy efficiency with high performance insulated glass and weather stripping. Typically all components are milled using mahogany or cypress.
New steel components replicating original steel windows: BlackBerry has the ability to provide new hot rolled and cold rolled steel windows. Exact site line replication is more limited than with wood components; however, the most common industrial steel projected and casement windows are readily available. The new replicated steel windows are provided with factory painted finish and the option of galvanized components. We offer new glazing systems, eliminated the original putty glazing and allowing for insulated glass or high performance glass in many applications. BlackBerry can fabricate a wide variety of accessories, including mullions, true muntins, and hardware. The final product is one matching critical site lines with the long-lasting durability and the performance of windows with modern-day technology,
New aluminum windows replicating original wood and steel windows: Thermally broken energy efficient aluminum replica windows are the fastest growing approach to window restoration. BlackBerry has completed many projects including those requiring National Park Service approval using this solution. Excellent products can be provided which replicate original wood and steel historic windows, including double hung, fixed, projected and casement windows. BlackBerry has years of experience and expertise designing new replicated aluminum products including exterior panning and trim systems, simulated muntins, mullions, and interior sash trim. All this is done with exact detail matching the critical site line and profiles. The advantages are enormous when considering the superior energy efficiency, ease of operation, greater durability, and reduced costs over wood and steel restoration or replication.
